Creating “Fru: The Dark Souls of Fruit Ninja” in Unity was an exhilarating and challenging journey that I thoroughly enjoyed. This unconventional take on the classic Fruit Ninja game blended the fast-paced slicing action with the punishing difficulty of Dark Souls, resulting in a unique and rage-inducing experience.

The concept for “Fru” emerged from a desire to create a game that tested players’ patience and skills to their limits. I wanted to develop a game that was not designed to be beaten easily but still managed to captivate and engage players with its addictive gameplay. Drawing inspiration from the unforgiving nature of Dark Souls, I embarked on this ambitious project.

The development process began with planning the game mechanics. The core mechanic was, of course, slicing fruits with precision and speed. However, unlike the traditional Fruit Ninja, in “Fru,” the fruits came at you relentlessly, and they were no longer just colourful and refreshing but menacingly challenging. I introduced various types of fruits, each with unique patterns and attack styles. Some fruits were fast and erratic, while others moved slowly but had devastating effects.

As development progressed, I found myself testing the game over and over again, not just to debug it but also because it was genuinely addictive. The frustration of failure, followed by the exhilaration of progress, was an emotional rollercoaster that kept me hooked.

In the end, “Fru: The Dark Souls of Fruit Ninja” became a game that defied convention. It was not designed to be easily conquered, but it offered a unique and addictive experience that pushed players to their limits. Coding this game in Unity was a labour of love, a testament to the possibilities of merging different gaming genres, and a reminder that sometimes the most enjoyable games are the ones that challenge us the most.
